An Ambulatory Surgery Center (ASC) is a health care facility that specializes in providing surgery, pain management, and certain diagnostic services in an outpatient setting. Ambulatory surgery centers do not provide emergency services. Many orthopedic, gastroenterology, eye, and other types of surgeries such as plastic surgery are now performed in ambulatory surgery centers.
Ambulatory surgery centers are used for performing surgery on patients who do not require hospitalization because the procedure should not require more than a total of 23 hours for preparation, surgery and recovery. However, some ASCs are staffed and equipped to care for patients overnight.
